Biography.
Amanda Tapping was born on the 28th August 1965 in Rochford, Essex, England and is 1.75 tall. When she was three years old along with her parents she moved to Ontario, Canada. She grew up with her three brothers who as Amanda recalls didn’t have easiest of time when she was in her teenage years. She and Chris are dizygotic twins. One of her brothers, Steven, died december 2006. From a young age her parents tried to show her love for nature and science. Her father really wanted Amanda to become scientist. Amanda as child dreamed of being either actress or a sea biologist. She excelled in both math and natural science, but her desire of becoming actress eventually won and Amanda chose art as her field. During her studies at high school she won Dramatic Arts Award as well as award in a field of science Environmental Science Award.
Amanda studied drama art at the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Arts in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. After graduation she spent four more years studying theatre play. During these years she appeared in several theatre plays including Children of a Lesser God, Lion in winter and Steel Magnolias. As she recalls she used to be a little naïve about the acting world being confident she would never do television. Soon she realized there is no other way and hired an agent which got her first television work in commercial for Tim Horton´s Oat Bran Muffins. After couple more TV spots she later made an episodic appearance in such television classics as Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, Due South, Outer Limits or The X-Files.
Along with her friends her two friends she founded Random Acts, a comedy troupe that performed improvised comedy sketches and a comedic mini plays at small conventions and festivals. Random Acts broke-up after its performers went their separate ways and moved to different cities.
Amanda is probably best known for her role in science-fiction TV series Stargate SG-1 where she got role o Capt. Samantha Carter, member of Unites States Air Force and brilliant theoretical astrophysicist. Role that was part of her daily life for incredible eleven years and that brought her fame among people all around the world and also many television film and series awards. Character of Samantha Carter became a role model and a symbol of bravery and courage for a countless women and girls in the world. In order to portray her character right Amanda spent some time with an ex-navy seal and also studied books about physics and astrophysics. When Stargate SG-1 got cancelled after astonishing ten years Samantha Carter (now full time Colonel) appeared in fifth season of spin-off Stargate: Atlantis as the Atlantis leader.
During her career Amanda already had an opportunity to work with such big names as David Carradine, Malcom McDowell or Angelina Jolie. Her dream in a field of film is to appear in a historic movie.
At present Amanda plays character of beautiful yet mysterious and enigmatic Helen Magnus in the sci-fi TV series Sanctuary, a 157 year old Dr. born in Victorian England that runs sanctuary for all the creatures that goes bump in the night. Sanctuary is literally Amanda’s baby as she stood by it from the very hard beginning in the form of eight web episodes. Not only that Amanda plays the main character in the series, she’s also executive producer and director.
Even though her great success in a television field Amanda still says that theatre is her passion. Last time she had an opportunity to perform was in play Vagina Monologues for V-Day movement, organization fighting to stop violence committed on women.
Amanda likes to spend her free time with her daughter Olivia B., her husband Alan and their dog George. She likes camping, hiking walks in the nature, horse riding. She even plays guitars but as she says “never in the public, ever.”. She is Active supporter of several charity organization including Waterkeeper Alliance, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Pollution Probe, Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and is also founder of Sanctuary for Kids.
The beauty of Amanda’s spirit strikes many people’s hearts. Her carrying for the fans is beyond doubts the reason why so many of them love coming to conventions from all around the globe to see her and meet her. Amanda is also one of the very few people in the world that has her own convention dedicated to her and her fans.
At the 23rd september 1994 Amanda Tapping and Allan Kovacs married. She accepted his surname official but kept Tapping as her artist name. Allan Kovacs is an actor, too. At the 22nd March 2005 Amanda Tapping bore her daughter Olivia Kovacs. She weighed 9 pounds 4 ounces.
